I am trying to put together the requirements of first aiders for a Church. I understand that there is no legal requirement (conversation with St Johns Ambulance). But what is the best practice based on numbers of attendees?

Hello Machew and welcome.

The First Aid at WORK Regs (my capitals) put a duty on employers to make provisions for first aid for employees - in a low risk environment like a church with few (if any) employees then you may only need an Appointed Person, who can take charge in an emergency and call 999. Only if you are carrying out riskier activities, or if the location means help may take some time to arrive then you may want to think about training someone. There are 2 levels of training: 1-day Emergency First Aid at Work; and the 3-day First Aid at Work course.

The law does not require first aid for the public, but many organisations have a policy to include the public in their provision.

The HSE provides useful guidance on assessing your first aid needs, have a look and I think it will enable to to make a decision of what you need in your circumstances. http://www.hse.gov.uk/fi...aid/needs-assessment.htm

You might find these to be helpful sources of information:
http://www.churchsafety.org.uk/
http://www.ecclesiastica...althandsafety/index.aspx

The churchsafety site has a useful section on first aid. Membership of churchsafety is reasonably priced and would put you in touch with others who will likely have answers to this and other related questions.
