Here's an interesting one.. After moving from 15+ years manufacturing into the offshore world, I changed from 8 hour to 12 hour when working out AFR etc etc. My new COO asked at my last safety committee 'why are you using 12 hours, at my last firm, we used 24 hours'. I have never heard of using 24 hours before and explained that as far as I was aware, although the workers work 12 hour shifts and are technically still exposed to [certain] hazards when 'off duty' all calculations I have ever come across use either 12 or 8 hours as the 'hours worked' and that the time 'off duty' is not considered.... Of course I have done some googling and everything I have come across supports my 12hr on duty time as the number to be used but I'd like to ask the good people of this forum if they could add anything of value to this topic/thread? Thanks - yes, I agree - I also pointed out that should they have been unfortunate to have an LTA they would be racking up the hours lost at a double quick pace!
