Good morning, I am currently working within a primary school (academy) and am about to meet with the Parent Liaison Officer to go through her role and create a risk assessment. One of the aspects she has mentioned to me in advance of this meeting is that her role seems to be more and more dominated with Safeguarding issues she has to manage, liaising between parents and the authorities. She also reported to me that she finds it 'harrowing' sometimes. This of course alerted me to how she may be supported in her role having to deal with this and I shall be asking more questions during the meeting about the how's and why's to establish what safety management system is in place. In any case my question is to you: Can you tell me what experience you have had in this field and what systems have been put in place to reduce risks and manage the stress impact? I have a good deal of experience working for a Police Force before so I know what they had in place for such issues, but I am interested in what other experiences you have out there you can share. thanks in advance

T What is your role and experience with schools; as that is the first question to ask as they [especially academies] are completely different to the police and similar? Get yourself up to date with Safeguarding and its relevance re schools and who the various authorities are as its not the same as the police [I have worked with both] and as usual in schools people are given roles/take on roles that they have no competence in and U also have to deal with parents which is another issue altogether

I am already up to speed with Safeguarding and you are right... I fear it is could be a classic case of personnel being given roles 'hoping they can deal' with them. This is really why I am asking the question, because as I am working as both a parent governor/stakeholder, and am also acting as their health and safety advisor I am trying to gain as much knowledge and suggestions as poss. before I meet with them. Any experience you can share with me on how this aspect has been managed (preferably successfully) would be gratefully received please. I am experienced in many industries but this is my first time in education, whilst I am getting to grips with it, there are a few pockets that I am learning about.

Also note that stress [which is a massive factor in schools with teachers losing pensions and other working conditions all the time and putting up with abuse from both parents, under 18's and Gov agencies] and safeguarding are 2 different things and in themselves are made up of different segments with the chance of stress being enforced by the HSE being a very remote thing whereas the agencies that measure Safeguarding etc. may look at things differently Also ensure that you are personally & adequately insured as things will fall to U if there is any doubt and if U are a bonafide H&S person as against being a none competent person who has been given the role be v-careful noting that there are many laws attached to education, children etc. that are in addition to and supersede in some areas HSWA etc. With safeguarding being but only one area With all due respect this appears to be a typical academy situation, which is rife throughout the country, where H&S people who are competent with regards to educational areas and child welfare in particular are not being used as they should e.g. if a school wants an an electrician they get an electrician not a school gov who has put a plug on to do their electrical work in the school so why should H&S be any different and I advise getting paid for taking the responsibility which is above and beyond 'normal' governor risk if U are a H&S professional outside the school in other areas especially as I know [I have dealt with many academies] that such schools are awash with dosh & pay many 'consultants' etc. large fees as well as themselves large salaries I may sound negative but it is not a 'get at U personally' situation I can assure U its just that the one area that such schools do not appear to want to pay for is H&S e.g. for a single overview fire risk assessment many schools are paying £1000 yet are shocked if H&S want even £500 for many risk assessments in many areas!! Best of luck
