FLT – Thorough Examination – Replacement of Chain
Rank: Forum user
|
The site manager has recently hired a FLT, and I have being given a copy of the FLT Thorough Examination Cert,
1. What is the standard regarding inspection and replacing of FLT chain?
2. On the Report of Thorough Examination the Chain elongation (1) dimension - 1” Wear is 0.75 & Chain elongation (2) Dimension - 1” Ware is 025 – What is the minimal tolerance allowed.
I have also requested a copy of the Chain Cert (replaced on 12 January 2011)

Im not sure I know the answer here as Im not 100% sure what your asking
by way of forklift chain do you mean its a lifting accessory - Ive seen forklifts come with attachments that go on the forks that allow a chain to hang down so that lifting operations to be carried out?
if thats what you mean then its 6 month inspection under LOLER as its a lifting accesory
the forlkift should have come with examination certs etc so if you are in any doubt I would go straight back to the hire company and ask them

On an FLT, the bit that falls under LOLER is the chain that makes the forks go up and down. This is not an accessory, this is the actual lifting equipment. As such, you need to have a proof load Certificate for this. It should be subject to Thorough Examination at least once every 12 months.
As for the tolerances, you need to talk to your inspector about those.

By my understanding tolerances for FLT chain elongation are: between 2% but not over 3% elongation requires a decision by a competent person whether the chain is suitable for further use, and at >3% elongation the chain needs replacing immediately.
Due to the harsh conditions our FLT's face our thorough inspection is 6 monthly, as hilary rightly states though the thorough examination can be up to 12 months, but as usual this comes down to risk assessment.

You should look at the forklift truck as a whole, on the inspection certificate it should be mentioned when the chain is to be changed, as this is down to the competent person who carried the thorough inspection.
Now regarding how often the inspection is to be carried depends how you use your forklift truck, if you have an access cage then is considered lifting equipment and must be inspected every 6 months (forklift truck, cage and harness), for normal duties then no more than 12 months between inspections.

Just to clarify LOLER requires thorough examination and inspection of lifting equipment according to a scheme of examination (SOE). The minimum for lifting "things" is 12 months; for lifting people, it's 6 months. Lifting accessories - it's 6 months. OR..............in line with your SOE. Simple.

It seems a bit of an odd question, no offence meant. If you have a copy of the Thorough Examination it will say if the FLT is ok to use or not. If it has defects it will state what needs to be done to rectify.
Is it that you disagree with the examining engineer ? Hence the question.
If its a hired vehicle and defective return it and hire another.

The limits and tolerances for chain wear would be found in the workshop maintenance manual for the particular make/model of the machine. It would also state the interval at which the checks should be carried out.
