Hi We are considering purchasing a semi electric pallet truck to help reduce the risk from manual handling. These pallets trucks are similar to a manual pallet truck but fitted with small electric motor to assist in initial movement of the pallet and then helps to assist in the drive of the pallet truck whilst the operator pulls as well. They are limited to maximum speed of 4mph and the operator does not ride it. Before deciding to purchasing it I have been asked to advise if the staff using this equipment would need to have specialise training or if appropriate safe method of working training would suffice. I am leaning towards the safe method of use training but I would appreciate if any users have experience of this type of pallet truck or any thoughts from other forum users. cheers

Hi I have just asked our MHE instructor, and he advises that as a motor is fitted it becomes powered MHE and instruction is required. Myself, whilst it is only a small motor I think you will have to class it as a PPT. The training guidance and ACOP L117 on Lift Truck Training states that " the general principles can be used as a guide when training operators of other truck types. " Ian
