Does anyone know of any guidance material or research that qualifies, quantifies or recommends an optimum ratio between the numbers of in-house H&S advisors and related total staff numbers in a construction business? I'm aware of the IOSH sponsored work that makes a link between H&S provision and improved safety performance related to company turnover, but something more tangible that might help me in my efforts to grow my team would be much appreciated.

Nothing specific, but RR121 "Benchmarking the competent person in manufacturing and engineering sectors" may give you a steer.

Upshot is that many advisers with multi-site responsibility in what I'd generally consider to be a 'comparable risk' Industry are often on their own. Others have upwards of 20 people reporting to them.

Either way, you'll need a strong business case and a clearly identified long-term gap between resource and demand to enable you to 'grow' your internal resource.

Many employers still have the misconceived belief that 'competent person' necessarily means an individual. You may have to clarify that one first!!!
