Hi all, we provide AIR stats and currently our AIR is set at 5.5, this is just a random number that has been selected last year, why 5.5 I have no idea. My question is what would be a realistic rate to set as a target and how would you set a rate? I work in the waste industry. How does anyone else set these types of targets? Also what would be the best way of benchmarking the company I work for company against other waste industries stats?

A good starting point would be reviewing the HSE's 2014 statistics for the waste & recycling industry, use the industry average's to guide you in setting realisitic targets. The report can be found using the link below. http://www.hse.gov.uk/st...ling/waste-recycling.pdf

Unless you want to benchmark against the whole industry including its worst elements such as some unscrupulous scrap merchants, you might be better starting with the Environmental Services Association stats. http://www.esauk.org/esa...health_and_safety/stats/ Then might wish to adjust targets depending on how much on street work you do - this tends to be the area that exhibits highest accident rates amongst ESA members.
