what do people think of an e-learn platform that allows you to train on any area. do you think its good value to be able to train in area, and to have all content at your finger tips?

E-learning is ok as far as it goes but a) for some things you need a personal hands on approach eg manual handling b) some just don’t do e-learning (not their learning domain to be poncey) and c) it is very hard to judge how effective it has been unless it includes a serious test otherwise it is just a tickbox exercise (eg”250 staff have had H&S training-it says so on the spread sheet, so we don’t have to worry about competency anymore”)

I can see some practical benefits especially for those subjects where interaction is not really necessary - for example, DSE e-learning. However, it could be construed as a lazy and not very good method of providing other types of training. Some would argue it's better than nothing of course.

well the e-learn provider i was looking at has its own bespoke corse building which i thought was very good. As i have many powerpoints that have took me very long to make i dont wanrt to loose them. plus the large video content they asre enabling me to use and a great feature allowing sign off on documents ect. i wondered if anyone else has used this and what they thought of it?

Further the my comments
Some e-learning packages are ok. They should be flexible and if you can’t customise the contents to your requirements I would not bother. We looked at a package like this to help with things like basic inductions and raising awareness of certain issues. But there are limit to what they can do and proper learning needs the human touch. I note you are keen to preserve your PowerPoint slide that you have built up over the years which is good but remember that the slides are only a small part of the learning process. It is HOW you say it that is important; almost more important than WHAT you say (the dance not the song as someone told me). Slides or e-learning cannot convey this. One possible approach that interests me is what is called ‘Flip learning’. In traditional learning the trainer does his presentation and then goes off, leaving the students to do the test/homework/assessment on their own. In flip learning the student is allowed to learn alone at their own pace using something like an e-learning platform and then the tutor comes along and guides through the assessment process. This gives them access to an expert voice and allows the tutor to see how the learning has be taken up by the student.
