Hi

We have started to receive large quantities of used or old books, we have noticed that there has been an increase in dust levels due to this. Can anyone advise on the best way to control this whether it be PPE or if there is a way to reduce the dust levels when handling these books.

thanks in advance

Libraries have this problem. Old books can be mouldy - the spores can cause illness such as Farmer's lung. Therefore, I would be cautious - RPE may be necessary especially if the books are opened. If it is just "normal" dust, you could consider cleaning or vacuuming? Lots of stuff on the web eg http://cool.conservation.../annual/v09/bp09-02.html

Consider having them cleaned at source, thus not receiving the problem.

You make a general statement about an 'increase in dust levels' and I think you need to be more specific; if you do not have the information to be more specific then there is your first place to start.

What about humidity? It may be that all this extra paper has significantly reduced the humidity and made the existing dust level more apparent.
