Is there a set 'contents' for the H&S Manual. New Company and previous Company Contents, where completely different....Or does it not matter, as long as it contains all relevant information regarding the Health and Safety Management System for your Company

thanks

I think there are things that have to be in the Policy Statement but clearly your organisation and mine are working completely different disciplines so I would expect some commonality but a lot of differences. As long as your information for your system is covered then you should be OK.

The manual should contain sections that are relevant to the work activities and not superfluous stuff that does not apply.

Thus a microbiological lab would need stuff on containment whilst a quarry may need an explosives section, with the office needing neither. First Aid, slips, trips, falls etc should be common to all.

I think Q1 is "what is the purpose of the manual".

The 'manual' approach is very often superseded these days by the intranet site - much more flexible

Hi Ron...Would having all information on the Companies Intranet, instead of having a traditional Health and Safety Manual, hurt the Companies prospect of achieving 18001???

18001 auditors would be looking for evidence of the management system being implemented and effective your management system must be a living breathing working system.

Yes its Ok to have it located on your intranet but blank templates are not much use as evidence.

Another question to ask is what accreditations your company may be hoping to move towards and what benefit there may therefore be in developing the structure of the manual to help there.

I say this because my own company (at a Stage 1 visit towards 18001 accreditation) was recently recommended to consider future restructuring of the manual to some extent 'mirror' the structure of the standard.

Not compulsory of course, but a consideration.

That's worth considering Dag.

I think that you need to watch that you don't fall into the trap (that many people do) of making your management system fit or mirror 18001, its important that 18001 fits into your systems.

I bet the advice given to you was from the auditor, some of them say this because it make it easier for them to audit. Remember 18001 is not a standard its a framework as long as you comply with the clauses that's all that matters.

So.... when devising you safety management system consider how you will meet the clauses, especially the management review part.

I've always worked to the following structure:

Introduction - including policy review and amendments
H&S Policy Statement
Environmental Policy Statement
Organisation Chart for Safety, Health and the Environment
Responsibilities
Health and Safety Rules
Arrangements
Risk Assessment
Monitoring of Health and Safety
