To NEBOSH or Not to NEBOSH… That is the question

Hi all,
Hoping to move into the H&S industry- primarily looking for work abroad- I have worked in the middle east since 2004 and still quite happy working away at this moment in time- Although as change in scenery would be nice.
I currently hold a NVQ level 5 , OHSAS 18001, an IEMA Env Cert as well as a MSc in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management.
Now the question is do I go and do a NEBOSH NGC- I see the majority of job ads have a prerequisite for NEBOSH or equivalent- Now while i know my NVQ 5 is equivalent to the NEBOSH diploma- do many employers… so do I bite the bullet fork out 1.5k and get it out of the way?? At this moment in time I am thinking that it will only increase my employability.. so swaying towards the NEBOSH NGC just to have that tick in the box.

Hi
If I was in your shoes I wouldn't bother with the NGC - not with your current qualifications. If I really wanted to tick the box go for the NEBOSH Diploma.

Er Mark, would a NEBOSH Cert not be a bit of a backward step for you. Since you hold a degree already, have you considered one of the HE courses to get to you Grad IOSH and then work your way to Chartered.
It may be worth attending a local branch meeting and talking to the Education Advisor about options.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies and comments- I already hold my Grad IOSH and Im working towards Chartered status. The suggestion about attending a branch meeting and speaking to an education advisor is great and I will definitely follow this advice.
My thoughts behind the NEBOSH NGC is to show that as well as having the technical know how via the NVQ I have and understanding of UK regulations.

If you feel that way put in about £300 extra and do the Diploma by distance learning. I wouldn't bother with the NGC if I had a MSc in a safety related discipline

Why not go for it (the cert?)
Go with a DL course provider, then, with your existing knowledge, just turn up and sit the exams!
Seriously some employers only recognise NEBOSH and you made need this regardless. Do note that I have seen people with level 5 and 6 SHE qualifications STRUGGLE with the NEBOSH cert - so don't underestimate it. What's to lose in doing the cert?

Trouble is NEBOSH Gen Cert is not a "professional" level qual according to NEBOSH themselves so with your NVQ L5 I would do the NEBOSH Diploma. Or if you wanted to go into say construction get the NEBOSH Construction Cert. It and the Diploma carries significant weight with employers as you and others have previously stated. It also fits well into most adverts who more often than not say "must have NEBOSH Dip etc" rather than must have an NVQ. Both of course ticks all boxes and satisfies all angles. This is not about what route is of more value but rather which route is more commonly requested by employers. It is employers you need to look to satisfy rather than ego in my humble opinion.

My suggestion is that ,just go and take NGC, just something on your belt as NEBOSH.. from market perspective..unless you convinced yourself that the knowledge you have gained from NVQ5 was much less than NEBOSH Diploma!

Its utterly pointless doing the NGC as your qualifications considerably surpass it. There could be an argument for doing the DIP but you have attained the equivalence in that also. Put your efforts into your chartership Be very careful on job applications to declare you have a better than equivalence qualification.

One of my work colleagues is undertaking his NEBOSH Dip and is convinced it is the equivalent of a Masters level 8 according to the learning provider. My personal experience is potential employers only relate to NEBOSH as most employers have not heard of IOSH let alone the Safety, Health and Environmental Management degree which is IOSH accredited

Take a look at the NCRQ Diploma route starting in December.
