Hi All
Currently working on a project about 500 yards away from Heathrow terminal 4. I am a bit concerned with the fumes generated by the aircraft on landing and taking off. Depending on the wind direction, the smell can be very strong on the site. Site operatives are complaining of the smell. Please see my questions below;
Are these fumes cancerous and are there any known cases?
Obviously the risk cannot be eliminated as it is not caused by us, so is the issuance of relevant PPE enough?
How would you manage this situation?
Any advise will be very helpful.
Regards Kofi

http://www.itv.com/news/...r-over-fume-event-fears/http://aerotoxic.org/fume-events/Both links relate to "on-board" observations where engine lubricant oils have visibly misted within the cabin. Currently two on-going inquests in to air line staff who sadly passed away after presenting with what appear to be the symptoms of organo-phosphate poisoning. Unfortunately there is disagreement upon how expert opinion has been (miss) represented and the outcome of an EU investigation in to cabin events is not due until late 2016. I cannot recall ever seeing any air-side staff (baggage handlers, despatchers or similar) wearing RPE when passing through airports so either a known and presumed minimal risk, or a lack of formal consideration by their employers. Given that airports regularly apply for permission to expand operations there will be information on emissions in both their application and from the groups fighting the application e.g. Friends of the Earth - these would highlight which materials could be present so that you could undertake site air quality measurement with a suitably qualified provider. Only when you have identified which agents are present would you be in a position to determine the correct RPE/PPE to mitigate any risk.
