Just caught an advert for an on-line white goods retailer. What a sad reflection on their marketing department showing a delivery driver on a hand held mobile advising the customer they are "30 minutes away" whilst blatantly driving.

Am I too critical or is society slipping in to condoning known and unacceptable practice?

Rounds, you are quite right to be disappointed. Competent businesses provide employees with good equipment and devices to minimise risk. The Cowboys don't, and the Advertising Standards should be enforcing compliance to laws.

And we could talk about the numerous BBC programmes on building restorations where roof work is often seen without edge protection. In fact I saw an appalling example just last week where the girl presenter was on a sloping tiled roof with nothing to prevent her falling over 3 metres! Maybe we should name and shame programme episodes. There may be blogs already doing this.

Regards the lady on the roof would it be acceptable if she had a stunt double?

TV programme makers seem to be very ignorant of H&S regs and do get away with it.

Whenever you see the Prime Minister or any of his Cabinet members on building sites they always dress in PPE and stand behing barriers, theyndo set the right example.

Next time you see the TV Ad why not take a picture and send it to the Police, see if they award some points and a fine.

Just had a quick look at the advert concerned (its on Youtube) and it is clear to me that the person making the call is the drivers mate.

AO make a big thing of their 2 man delivery crews in the ads.

So, panic over, nothing to see here.

Plenty to see. AO sent links to their extended "directors cut" YouTube versions. indeed in these it is a drivers mate on the phone. Great pity that the editor clipping and framing the abridged version for TV chose to close up giving the impression of a single cab occupant on the mobile in a moving vehicle.

So I will stand by AO! no. no. as they have corporate control of their presented image on ALL media not just that of the internet.

Slightly digressing, I noticed a recent advert from a well known car manufacturer illustrating that their model has hands free built in to the phone - so easy to talk to mum. We know it's not illegal to use a hands-free phone, but if it causes a distraction blah,blah...

On the subject of cars beware 1st July when travelling in France. Bluetooth headsets, apple ear buds or anything shoved in the drivers ears will attract a nice expensive fine from the Gendarme's

If you are concerned about any practices shown in adverts, complain to the Advertising Standards Authority, it does work. I, and a small number of others, complained about a car advert showing occupants including the driver jigging about to music, and even one woman who appeared to have her eyes closed whilst driving. The complaint was upheld and the advert disappeared.

Try reading the Original Post - the TV ad seen was a close up of a single person on a hand held mobile.
(eye witness statement)

Then read the entire thread - I acknowledged the presence of both driver and assistant in the extended un-cropped material posted on YouTube which would have been heavily edited to fit a TV slot.
(CCTV review)

Then feel free to comment - in accordance with the forum terms

So should AO consider that IOSH forum users will be over critical of the final cut of their adverts before they put them on line?

Maybe this should be addressed to the Group Head of Health and Safety at AO.COM?

And for some reason the public seem to think our profession is out of touch with reality!

On facebook recently there was a picture of a police officer using a hand held mobile phone while driving his police car.

There was a suggestion to share the picture to see of we could get him noticed by the authorities and fined.

Don't know if anything resulted though.

Can I ask what is wrong with people wanting to put a picture somewhere so that they can be identified and fined. I'm not just talking about the police officer I am also talking about the delivery driver. Who took these photo's someone a driver in the next car holding his/her mobile, because if they weren't talking on it they were not really using it.

OK we do H&S work but know wonder people laugh, this website should be advertised more so that people can come on and laugh at the suggestions sometimes made.

Look at the news yesterday, Birmingham new shopping centre, the interviewer had, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, overalls, one person being interviewed the same, another no safety glasses. It was ridiculous no one was even working. I know they have rules on site but really, gloves to hold a microphone, glasses no work was even being carried out at the time and they were stood in the middle of the atrium.

But who I'm I to stop people taking photographs and sending them to someone to try and identify them. My opinion is H&S is about education, bringing people into thinking about safety not alienating them. We continue to strive to get accident numbers down but then we are happy to bully people into accepting H&S.

invictus,

The law prohibits holding a device while driving. It says "it is illegal to drive using hand-held phones or similar devices". If you are holding it then you ARE using it.

I agree H&S education is important, but can you see how YOU need to know the regs yourself! :o)

Police radios have a function that allows them to be used as either a radio or mobile depending on what frequency they can achieve best, you are also allowed to call 999 or 101 in an emergency when it is not safe to stop- we don't know the full story so can't really comment. At least he had his eyes looking forward unlike half the numpties calling or texting with their phones on their laps or in the middle of the steering wheel.

1. It is a law and not a regulation 2. I pay tax's for the police to do that job. It annoys me that people continue to drive and use mobiles particularly when holding them as this slows me down because they are driving with no hands at some point to change gears, it annoys me that they could kill me, my passengers, their passengers or pedestrians.

But if I went around concerning myself with everyone else I would have no time for me. I work 8-4 and then I go home and forget about it until the next day. I like to call this a work life balance.
