I have a couple of employees who work in oil mist and I want to get them tested for lung function as a precaution.
What is the best way of going about this? If it were 10 or more I would just get a health surveillance company in, but it doesn't seem to make sense for just 2 of them.
Has anybody had a similar issue, or can point me in the right direction please? Most appointed doctors seem to be miles away. We are in Tamworth Staffs.

If it's a one-off, you could try their GP's. They also carry out LFT.

I wouldn't recommend using the services of a standard GP practice as it is better to use medical staff who are accredited to the Faculty of Occupational Medicine or an Occupational Health Nurse. Many hospitals now have Occupational Health Units which it may be more practical for small numbers of employees.
You mention that you have a couple of employees who work in oil mist. I assume that you have undertaken risk assessments and that you already have controls in place which are designed to keep them safe and that the health surveillance is just to ensure that your controls are doing the job?

Get rid of the oil mist.
What good is a lung function test now?
No baseline measurement, you're starting from damaged and working up.
Hopefully their GPs' will have already done spirometry on them. GPs' are very good at spotting problems. Hopefulky the guys are in a union. This is the 21st century isn't it?

We are looking at other options other than, the very expensive occupational Health route. We were thinking of asking our staff to go a local clinic to have their lung function test,We have staff all over the UK , so it will be a nightmare to set up , but I am sure it will give us better value for money in the long run.
It would also be easier for our staff to attend a local establishment....Has anyone had any experience of doing this? Would welcome your views

that makes it sound like your bosses are willing to put a price on their employees Health. Surely the most cost effective method is to have a healthy staff. GPs vary from one to another, one GP may decide a result is a cause for concern but another may not. Surely having one organisation setting a standard test for everyone is a better way.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
It is only a small company, hence cost is important. We are now looking at getting LEV installed.
I have only been here a short while myself so have identified the oil mist as an issue. The lung function test was more of a precaution than anything as no-one is complaining of any issues.
If the workers have no problems prior to LEV being installed they are unlikely to develop any afterwards, but it will make the working environment more amenable.
I still haven't managed to find a service provider that I can send my guys to locally. So if anyone can help with this I would be grateful.
