Ok so, Dr Suzannah Lipscomb has made another one of those hidden killers programs
Watched it yesterday and from a EHS advisors point of view the entire programme made me shudder! From asbestos factories looking like a Christmas scene every morning (asbestos snow fall), to uninsulated, unprotected electrical circuits and items. To people licking paint brushes which were covered in radon. (Women were employed to paint clock numbers with radon paint).
Fascinating and very scary all at the same time.
Hope they dont make a program in 2050 called hidden killers of the 90s home! :-)

The problem is, that as we have got rid of these "hidden killers" people live longer. Working on this basis, the programme in 2050 called hidden killers of the 90s home will see us all living to 150 years old and working to 100! This doesn't sound like a lot of fun :(

Very true it doesn't sound great! :)... I think they will probably discover in a few years that 20 to 30 years plus of exposure to wifi and mobile phone signals fries the brain..;-)

In 20-30 years time I believe they will be doing programmes about the adverse effects of all the additives and colourings put into processed food and drink as well as the chemicals used in the manufacture of plastic bottles and containers etc etc. There are hidden killers all round us and as we live longer the accumulation affect of these things will become more prevalent. I hope I am around to watch the programme........

People live longer because of medical science....take that away and the death rate will skyrocket.
Look back and wonder.
No doubt the H&S act/s etc have cut workplace injuries and deaths, and various legislation has reduced the possibility of lead poisoning et-al....but if you take the main killers in the Edwardian home they were pneumonia/syphilis etc.
If you take a look at life expectancy, then extend that look to HEALTHY life expectancy (yes, the GOV does do that) you will find that in areas of this country it is as low as 50 years of age. A bit higher than the average life expectancy of the early 1900s', which was 46 (at the time of the introduction of the state pension, which paid-out at 75 years of age (two shillings/wk), the LE of Mr/Mrs Average was 46.......
Hmmmm..
So, not H&S, but medical science.
