CSCS cards - renewal of Ind acc or grandfather rights
Rank: Super forum user

Afternoon all,
There is word on site that anyone with a CSCS card obtained by grandfather rights can no longer be renewed unless an NVQ3 - 6 is obtained.
Does anyone know if this is true? I am currently on the phone to CSCS (again) trying to get an answer.
Thanks

I understand the CSCS card was never intended to operate via "grandfather rights."
Employer applications were previously allowed to "attest" to the qualifications of their workforce. It became apparent (as HSE sponsored studies proved) that some employers were less than honest in their attestations. We can appreciate the commercial pressure some employers were under to conform, but they've had plenty of time since to catch up and get on-track with the VQ system.
The CSCS card purpose is, and always was, to demonstrate that you hold the appropriate level of professional qualification for your trade or professional role.
Now if you were to ask me if I'm a supporter of CSCS..........that's another matter entirely.

The above link to the CSCS site explains that "For some types of CSCS card applicants could previously apply based upon experience as evidence of their knowledge. This was known as Grandfather Rights or Industry Accreditation.
CSCS no longer accepts card applications by this method other than when an occupation not previously recognised by the scheme is introduced.
It may not seem fair that a competent person with years of experience can no longer use this as evidence to gain a CSCS card. My experience has shown however that this clause has admitted many that were less than competent and in particular those that had an old fashioned view and disregard for the safety of themselves and others. I cannot think of a fairer or more effective method of ensuring competence than insisting that the card holders be qualified and tested.
On a positive note, by excluding those who are not competent, construction sites should be safer and more pleasant places to work.
