Hi all
I am developing a programme so that all managers take an active part in H&S on our sites as part of my drive to include everybody in our safety culture.
This will include people who go onto site but do not get involved in safety, i.e. the QS's, or the MD. This way they can take an active part in our safety meetings rather than sit being bored and not understanding what is being discussed.
Would anybody be able to point me in the direction of a training DVD (preferably for dummies) on the basics of site inspections. I would like to use something like this in one or two training sessions.

Chris, not sure about the training materials but have you considered extending this to the workforce?

I used to have a client (policyholder) who did formworks on major construction projects. During the weekly safety inspection they would take one worker off the tools for an hour or so and ask them to join them on the tour.

It allowed the safety manager to spread the knowledge so to speak but it also allowed them to identify those workers with a bit of nouse about them who could be considered for further training / promotion.

It also gave the safety manager insight into the shortcuts and routine violations that the workforce devised and he could then address these in his SSOW.

Thanks Stevie,
We do this but I would just like something a little bit extra so that they get an oversight of the construction hazards rather than a foremans or managers opinion.

You could apply the CITB health, safety and environment test to managers, QS etc.?
The test contains both behavioural safety and general construction safety elements.

Up to you whether you go forward with the full CSCS card route.

If your managers etc. are bored and disinterested when attending meetings, I doubt a DVD will change things.

Interested in your reference to "our safety culture." Without buy-in and support from management, that 'culture' isn't going to improve or stick.

In our Company we have as part of our Construction Senior Management team on-going training they need to attend site with my department and carry out an on site assessment of how they feel the site is. This is purely for H&S and it focuses their thoughts on the daily issues site staff and trades have to deal with. This comes after an in depth brief on what my department look for in al areas from administration through to worker engagement/supervision etc. This then allows them during their normal course of work to take a view with the correct thought process and hopefully assist the site staff and trades to work safely. This is proving invaluable when the MD and his Senior team visit sites on their regular days out.

A company I work for has all site foremen using an ap on their device to do a site audit frquently.

Having proof of that saves them sending me out to site to just do exactly the same.

The same as FireSafety, we use a well-known App which works on Apple or Android devices and it has proved to be an excellent tool as is really simple to use once you've used it a couple of times. We've developed our own templates and now use it for sending in near misses, reporting hazards, site surveys and H&S inspections.

Thank you all. There are some really good suggestions there.
TJA and Fire safety- The app sounds appealing. How would I go about obtaining one please?
Ron
people are bored and not taking part in safety meetings because up until recently, they had never been to one before, and only go on site when absolutely necessary. so do not understand the issues hence the reason why I am trying to engage with them.

Just go to the Ap store on your device and search for health and safety site inspections or similar.
