We use a number of collection hubs (5 in England, 2 in Scotland) to deliver our goods to for collection by sub contractors (majority are ex-employees) who then install items in end users homes, we use the same transport company so have control on how goods are dispatched and empty pallets, damaged goods & waste packaging is collected but no control over the hubs themselves. Its been suggested that we should visit these hubs and assess them to ensure they are safe for the contractors to collect at, there's a counter argument that if there's any issues either the transport company or contractors should let us know as it isn't something we can police on a regular basis due to distances involved, we aren't receiving any negative feedback from contractors or transport company so leave well alone ?

Tough one. On the one hand it would be nice to have sufficient time/resource to periodically inspect/audit at these collection depots to make sure that all is well but in reality, in most organisations, that kind of activity is going to come a very long way down the 'H&S to do list' I'd have thought.
As an interim step I'd be tempted to speak with a few of the sub contractors (sufficient to cover a few of the collection depots) to get feedback from them. If any red flags fly as a result of that then this item perhaps gets promoted up the list but in the absence of any negative feedback or reports I'd likely have this on the back-burner......maybe for a very long time :-)

Backburner sounds good, meeting with the commercial manager tomorrow any may suggest some type of feedback form to allow any issues to be raised.

A feedback form is probably a less productive approach than lifting the telephone and speaking directly to your partners, although it will produce the "paper trail" so beloved of so many people.
If you have no control over these depots, do not own or lease them nor have your own employees there, I agree that they should be a low priority.
