If a company has CHAS, Constructionline, Safe Contractor etc, and SSIP are advising clients to accept one SSIP accreditation as proof of competence! Should we not bother renewing all but say CHAS as the certificates approach expiry dates?

Whilst SSIP and the supply chain can all help encourage interchangeable acceptance of pre-qual schemes, unfortunately we still live in a world where the commissioning client has the last word.
If, despite your gentle encouragement and persuasion, those that pay your Co. wages insist on specific schemes, then your going to be stuck with that.
Please do not that 'Constructionline' is NOT a H&S prequal. scheme in this context. Whilst Constructionline asks for (limited) health and safety information, assessment of that information is left up to the prospective client.

That will depend upon your customers I guess. They will ultimately decide if whatever accreditation you decide to go for is acceptable to them and whilst you can go down the suggested road of demonstrating equivalence via SSIP, it will be up to them to decide if they will accept it.
If you have a small number of regular clients for whom you do the most work then I suggest you discuss the matter with them and see if they are willing to accept the equivalence statements from SSIP. Of course this may limit you from new business so ultimately it will probably be a commercial decision as to which and how many schemes you go for.
