Clarification, can I ask if the removal of a finger nail by the hospital would be considered as an amputation under RIDDOR, comments please

Answer; no. The amputation stems from a medical procedure not the incident that lead to the hospital visit. Fingernail loss does not constitute amputation unless part of the finger is still attached to the nail.

Agree with saferay.
Would the IP be able to fulfill their normal duties after the procedure? It could be a seven day injury....

NO - because its not one of the following-
[amputation of an arm, hand, finger, thumb, leg, foot or toe]
However, was the person (if in your employ) hospitalised for more than 24 hours? Or off for more that 7 consecutive days, not including the day of the injury?

In my medical dictionaries amputation is permanent removal of a part of the body, i.e. leg or arm, that is permanent, i.e. the body cannot regrowth that particular part. Usually removal of a nail can be followed by regrowth, so no permanent effect.
