Hi, Can a harness and a fall arrestor be used in a man cage? I am being told no, that it must be a fixed length lanyard because a person could climb out the cage. This I do not understand, surely both are safe to use. This is also to be used on a mobile scaffold tower, again I am told that a harness is not required on a scaffold tower. I am very much aware of the loler testing that applies to the equipment, all the equipment including the FLT must be tested every 6 months.

Fall RESTRAINT is the best option but it depends on the length of the lanyard and where the anchor point is situated in the cage. If it prevents the person from climbing out, then Fall Arrest would be ok. This is also to be used on a mobile scaffold tower, again I am told that a harness is not required on a scaffold tower. Under no circumstances attach a lanyard to a mobile tower. If you fell over, you would bring the tower over on top of you. If it was tied in, the force would surely snap the tube the lanyard was attached to.

Sorry I haven't worded the question properly. Should a Lanyard be used or a Self Retracting Lanyard (SRL) when using a man basket.

Hi Your duty is to prevent a fall firstly, so you should use a restriction lanyard to top a person getting into a position they can fall from, or being catapulted out of a cage. Also, read the guidance on use of cages. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/pm28.pdf Ian
