Any Confined Space experts out there???? Need someone to give a brief on how to apply the confined space regs to a real life situation i.e. excavation of a 9mtr deep shaft to make a sewer connection. If anyone has experience in this area please comment and I will provide more details and hopefully I can get a better understanding of this grey area. Thanks

Sounds pretty straight forward to me...unless grey area means you have no lights (sorry couldn't resist..) The first bit is elimination so if you are doing this by auger boring or similar and not committing people then big tick..if not.. Definition is in the regs but so long as you have any one of the 5 specified risks: 1. risk of fire or explosion 2. loss of conciousness from excessive heat 3. asphyxiation from gas fume vapour or the lack of oxygen 4. drowning from an increase in the level of liquid 5. failure to reach a respirable atmosphere from entrapment in a free flowing solid... So wee bit more info please...

Further to the good advice above, there is the matter of support for the excavation which should be part of a temporary works design to ensure it does not collapse.
