Hello everyone, I've got to do a presentation for a job interview on a 3 year strategic plan for the 'continuous improvement' of health and safety within the organisation. So far I'm thinking along the lines of......... Engagement of Senior Leadership and developing a safety culture Communication Strategy (down and back up the organisation) On-going development of the existing SMS and reviewing it Accident reduction in key areas Occupational Health improvements in key areas Auditing compliance Training needs analysis Don't know if you agree with those or not but what would you put in yours? I know you can search for the subject line term and it will come up with a whole plethora of sites/documents but I want to find out what worked for you. Cheers

From first principles, the organisation will need to know where it is (in terms of legal and best practice compliance) and agree where it wants (or needs) to be in that same context. Note that 'want' and 'need' are far from the same thing and may be separated by many things. A '3 year plan for continuous improvement' suggests a gap analysis has already been done, and the presentation is about filling those gaps. Without data to inform your presentation, you can only really talk around the principles of plan/do/check/act and the roles that you and other stakeholders can play in securing the objectives. Personally, I'd avoid the potential minefield of "safety culture" and perhaps refer to safety behaviours instead.

You may also want to look at where the Business is going what the plan is for growth and how the safety strategy would fit in to Support the growth, reduction or aquisition. Communication is always a strong Point and failing in most organisations. Don't think you Need to know the H&S gap as that is detail what you do need to know isn where the Business is going or the industry developments. You may want to pick up on any accidents or industry related incidents to illustrate your Points.. Hope this helps...good luck :)

Only thing I would add is: "Start by familiarising myself with current situation/history as this will allow me to develop a plan that is relevant to the organisation's real needs." You cannot really develop a plan until you know where you are starting from. Chris

Continuous Improvement for things like the ISO standards requires some sort of measure. So in order to measure success on improvement you need to review were you currently are. You may also want to survey employees where they feel the company is and issues they perceive the company have. Consider how you will measure improvement, perhaps you could give examples. Chris

How about a tweak: • Assessment of the current state of H&S in the organisation • Development of KPIs to measure effectiveness of: o Engagement of Senior Leadership and developing a safety culture o Communication Strategy (down and back up the organisation) o On-going development of the existing SMS and reviewing it o Accident reduction in key areas o Occupational Health improvements in key areas o Auditing compliance o Training needs analysis • Review of the strategy Make it SMART as well PS I'd keep culture in as a) it's fashionable and b) 'safety behaviour' it what the petrochemical sector applies, putting the onus on staff not managers to take responsibility for H&S, usually just before one of their facilities goes up ( e.g. Deep-water)

Naturally you need to research and get a feel for what type of organisation it is. If they are quite transactional and traditional in their thinking then keep it to PDCA. If they are progressive then focus on culture, climate, leadership and engagement. Either way find out as much as you can about gaps and how you can fill these, and how you help the bottom line.... ...and good luck.

This could be a very loooooong list. Notwithstanding I would be interested in what resources will available for h&s initiatives, otherwise these aspirations will not materailise into anything meaningful if the support is not forthcoming.
