How do you determine how many fire detectors you need in a typical large office (200 staff). Is it based on the coverage that a single detector provides (enough detectors so the coverage overlaps)? I have a contractor telling me we should have a detector in every room/ office. I don't necessarily disagree but wondered if there was any decent guidance/ tools anywhere that help you make that decision when doing a risk assessment

BS 5839-1:2013 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises BS 5839-1:2013 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic buildings. It does not recommend whether or not a fire detection and fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises. In Section 2: Design considerations, it includes spacing and siting of automatic fire detectors http://shop.bsigroup.com.../?pid=000000000030260279 http://www.safelincs.co....ry-of-the-bs5839-1-2013/

Hello The Fire Protection Association produce a series of excellent guides on fire protection systems (unsurprisingly!) The Fire Detection and Alarm Systems booklet (nearly 70 pages) details the different types of system, trigger devices, call points and detectors, commissioning, installation, management and maintenance. It will answer all your questions. There are others on emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, signage etc. Just enough detail for a jobbing H&S officer or building manager. They're 20 quid a pop, but worth the money. Ian
