Do Inertia Reels need to have a thorough inspection every 6 months if they are to be used for fall protection in line with LOLER? My initial thoughts are yes due to it involving people but not 100% certain as i'm not sure if it technically involves lifting.

Frank without looking into regulations in my opinion the best way forward is. Daily Inspection by user. Monthly Inspection sheets again by user. Recorded Independent thorough examination as someone,s life may depend upon it. Obviously certificated. We also send ours back to be refurbed after about a year or if deemed necessary. As I said in my humble opinion only. Regards Alex

Good advice above . Our insurance company now do them every 3 months because I was concerned they are used every day all day . Outside the Normal inspection period but good practice when supporting life!

Strange but true, Inertia Reels are not covered by LOLER only PUWER. Therefore you have to maintain them as per the manufactures instructions taking into account the amount of use and working environment.

Whilst I believe Alfasev is correct, the inertia reel will fall under LOLER if it is of a type that incorporates a winch which can be used to raise a person who may have fallen.

Chas, that is correct.
