I am currently investigating ways to encourage near miss reporting for the company, anyone have any suggestions that have worked in the past?

A good place to start I have found is to explain to the employees why near miss reporting is important and the reasons we have to do it. A place I worked once gave prizes out for near miss reporting but then everything which needed mending in some sort of way became a near miss(like a crack in a fence panel) Explaining a near miss so people actually understand what to report will help and also keeping the near miss reporting very simple . The way you report at some places can be very of putting and time consuming and can turn in to a tic for tac situation which can be frustrating at times.

Make the 'reporting' options as varied, infomal, and as easy as you can. eg. Telephone. Text Email. Form (if you must) . . . and I'll come and talk to you. Tell your supervisor (they need the explanation then!)
Be prepared to have weird things reported, many of which you can dismiss. But in there could also be the gems . . .

Like others have said give them the reasoning behind reporting all near misses, stress the fact that is on a 'no-blame' basis, involve them in investigations and drawing up the action plan, and keep the loop complete by providing feedback on the outcome.
You should consider Hazard Reporting as well, if you haven't done so already.

I wonder if it's about time we should stop using the term 'near miss' or 'near hit' reporting and use unsafe condition (behaviour) reporting as that is what we are talking about. I think people will have more empathy for an unsafe condition as opposed to some vague representation of what is or is not a near miss - just a thought.
