I'm self-employed. I keep my accounts simple, if the job requires me travelling more than 20 miles round trip then I charge my hourly rate for the travel time. Sometimes I'm charging a full 7-hour day for a safety audit + report that takes 3 hours and travelling 3 hours.

I don't calculate hours and fuel, I just charge by the hour. There's one customer where I might do 100 miles, sometimes 200 miles, I just charge the same, a full day - because I can't do any other customer work that day.

I suppose Osbourne can't change my charging policy as I don't work for an 'umbrella' company?

If you are properly self employed then you do not work via an unbrellia co or similar situation, that said agents and employers like this type of thing as its far better for them so push people in that direction ----- and people need work so they have to go that way and with the new H&S law regarding 'one man bands' H&S standards are spirling downwards so people are even more exposed

NB: observing 4 apprentices recently I found that all 4 were self employed (as were all the trades people they worked with) & all 4 paid for their own tools & PPE etc. - I ask 'where are we going when apprentices are self employed!'
