They look perfect for when you are trying to relax in the home cinema installed in the dug out basement. It's damn annoying when the servants (cheap illegals, so slaves really) are using appliances, like those that little people buy, on the next floor.

Ray, the Miele in the Mail article may cost more than some of the cars you've bought, but I can guarantee it will last longer! Chris's comment about appliances lasting no more than five years is true, except for Miele, they have a different design philosophy. We had a Miele vacuum cleaner, when it broke down we replaced it with another Miele; it was a hard call, it had only lasted 17 years... I have no links to Miele at all, by the way, I just like the way they engineer their products. Oh well, it's come to this, discussing domestic appliances on a health and safety forum. Wake me when it's all over, John

Not sure if I like the jokes, reason being my dog jumped in the washing machine yesterday. Don't worry, at least he died in comfort. I see no reason not to ask advice from professional H&S people, there will always be someone who knows the answer. I am always happy to provide advice regarding Fire Safety without ridiculing the OP. How about this one, people who massage at home using oils, and who doesn't? haha, and if they wash their oil impregnated towels at 30 degrees, and then dry those towels in the tumble dryer are at risk of fire. Reason being the oils require a higher temperature wash to get them off the towel and the tumble dryer produces a hot enough temperature to ignite the oils. They can even self ignite in airing cupboard. A bit of industrial advice for people at home. http://www.dailymail.co....sential-oils-remain.html Thank you all who provided sensible advice, the rest are all (a word I am unable to say on this forum)

Clothing and towels etc can self combust even without oils, if you turn the dryer off without it finishing the cycle and leave the stuff in. Happened twice at a place I worked. Now isn't it good we are all playing nicely:)

I thought reputable brand washing machines these days all have a balance sensor that will stop it going into spin if an imbalance is detected, thus stopping noisy spins resulting from a bad balance of clothes in the machine, and indeed the machine doing the time honoured shuffle across the kitchen floor. Ours does, and although it can be frustrating at times, it does protect the machine and our ears. If the machine in question doesn't have such a feature, I would suggest buying a better machine.

Firesafety, don't be too touchy as there is some good advice, albeit in between some jokes. I was the first culprit I have to admit. Meanwhile, my wife has raised an issue I was not aware of and that is dust collecting in her tumble dryer which apparently can ignite if not cleaned out regularly. Dangerous things these household white goods - that's why I won't go near them!

Ray, lint accumulation is a significant fire risk in commercial and semi-commercial laundries. At my last place, where they have laundries in residential homes, we had regular filter cleaning schedules for all the tumble dryers. Accumulated lint causes fires every year, though it's not so much of a problem in domestic dryers as they don't usually get the use that commercial machines do, John

Ray lint in your dryer is no laughing matter. I make sure my wife cleans it out at least daily.

Firesafety Give us a clue what letter does it start with? H&S gets a name because of the inability to laugh at ourselves or situations and when we do our own professionals have a go. I won't say lighten up becuase I got shouted at last time I posted that. This posting has 'spun me right round baby, right round'. I have just completed a risk assessment on the washing machine and the socks are working a buddy system so that they come back out in pairs.

If this machine is making a noise it should not, it could be an indication that something is wrong and is a pre cursor to a more serious event. If you don't know what is considered acceptable then, the best you can do is try and find out. That would be either machine spec or national spec, so all in all not an unreasonable post. I think if you read FireSafety's own post, the first part is intended to join in the humour. I have had a relative who had a small fire from a faulty washer, I am now reluctant to leave the house with mine going as I know it is old. No I don't sit an watch it, but am around generally. Despite how well I empty pockets ( I turn shirt pockets inside out now), I still find things in the drum that should be there. Could this have happened ? Are you able to localise where the sound is coming from. Chris

Not too sure it was meant as humour in the first post! If it had been posted on the Friday ok. Still not a H&S issue under any of the regulations. But I suppose if it bothers someone then they need to deal with it and if posting on here is a way of dealing with all well and good.

Thank you all for your contributions. Invictus I am unable to even suggest any of the letters as the mods will not be pleased and I would no doubt be run out of town, or at least banned from this forum. The machine had a replacement drum a month or so ago and is now out of guarantee but as we believe this is the same fault as before we have called out the CANDYMAN haha If no one else can I hope the Candyman can. It is interesting to note the criticism of me raising a domestic issue here but if you look back through the threads you will find other domestic safety issues raised. Further and contrary to one poster I do not intend to make a claim against anyone we just want the machine to work as it should do. You may remember my successful claim against my daughter's school on disability discrimination grounds and the fact I did not claim any money, just an improvement in the school practices and procedures. Cheers.

Blimey Unless I have missed it, I can't see any reason for a ban and would hope that the Mods would apply common sense here. I don't want to be the only gobby ex fire inspecting officer here :) Good luck

What the hell? A bit of robust to and fro forms part of the slings and arrows of being in Health and Safety. I'm sure everyone here has tougher conversations in the course of their work than appear here. Do the mods not have to deal with difficult customers in the course of their day to day activities? We need to be able to call a spade a spade, without fear of censure surely. Off now for a mod induced break no doubt. Graham

I think there were some posts pulled, so we don't know what was actually said. I missed their actual content as the Mods were to good. I used to enjoy the old "bun fights" I think they were refereed to, provided they didn't get too personal. Ah the good old days. Hope FireSafety will be back as he only asked a simple question and if we didn't want to answer then there is no law requiring us to.

Why on earth would they call you a troll? We need more posters like you who call out the BS spouted by some posters. Personal insults say more about the poster than the target of their comments. Although I kNOW I'm a "smart ass" :-)
