Can someone please clarify for me is a maintenance employee is removing light fittings from a ceiling with Artex which may contain asbestos. Carrying out the task of removing 3 small screws whilst following the method statements in the asbestos essentials task manual, would the employees require asbestos removal training or will asbestos awareness training suffice? Many thanks

They require training for non licensed works as outlined in the approved code of practice. As far as I am aware there is no definitive requirements for how this training is delivered providing the correct content is covered at least in a proportionate way by a competent person. It is probably good practice to record and document any training that is given, but certainly I would say the expectation of training would be beyond asbestos awareness even for minor works.

Don't jump too far ahead. I don't like the ...."which may contain asbestos"... it either does, or does not Check first if there is asbestos in the ceiling by doing a Refurb survey as required. There is absolutely no point in going over the top if there are no ACM's present. On the other hand if there are, then you need to manage the work (part of which will include competency) correctly.

Asbestos Awareness Training is designed for those who MAY come into contact with ACMs, not for those who WILL, where a higher level of training is required than basic AAT. If you followed the process identified in a27 Asbestos Essentials for non-licensed tasks, it would not matter if the artex ceiling contained ACMs or not. Of course, if you took samples prior to the work being carried out and the artex ceiling showed NAD, then there is unlikely any need to follow a27.

Ok. my answer.. the asbestos essentials a27 says "Only carry out this work if you are properly trained and have the right equipment." the equipment type is listed in a27 and em4 http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/em4.pdf http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a27.pdf Training is identified in em2 http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/em2.pdf it is all laid out on the HSE website. what more do you need to know?

If it contains Asbestos, yes they would require Non Licensed Training. That would also include the required PPE and the safe disposal of the ACM. If it doesn't contain Asbestos, no. With you stating it 'May contain Asbestos', would i be correct if i assume you have had a management survey done rather than a refurb/demo survey?
