At a recent meeting at our hospital safety committee, the subject of Dangerous Goods Advisor was brought up. We dont have one as such - I know we use external advisors for radiology waste. My question is, do other Trusts etc employ them for other materials? Are they required when transporting medical products - gases etc. Can they be outsourced? Any help would be much appreciated SBH

SBH. There is no legal requirement for you to have one- transporting DG's is not your primary business and you are probably well below the threshold for full ADR transport. Outsourcing any advice is an option- just depends on what you want to do. Either train a colleague or outsource. Have a look at the courses on offer here: http://www.cameon.com/ I have no commercial connection with Cameon- I'm just a satisfied customer. Hope this helps. Andy

SBH there is a legal regal requirement in Accordance with ADR which are the carriage regulations if you are consigning more that 333KG of clinical waste per load then you need to aquire the services of a DGSA, this can be ither an internal person who is qualified or an external consultant even a small hospital will require this as 333kg is about 6 carts of waste and i am sure your hospital will be well above this threshold

I recommend you contact the Chemical Hazard Communication Society (chcs.org.uk) which is the 'home' of DGAs. They will be able to advise on what you need and, if needed, to provide you with DGA contacts in your area. Chris

Basically a DGSA is not required to be appointed as this is not your main or secondary activity. However I would use the services of a DGSA / training organization i.e. Peter East etc to train someone within the organization to ensure they are competent when transporting, loading, unloading of dangerous goods, e.g gases, infectious substances, medical products etc.
