Does anybody have any experience in dealing with Health and Safety matters pertaining to the Isle of Man? I believe that the Island is not a member of the EEC, so presumably the European Six Pack Regulations do not apply although the HASWA is recognised.

You could also try the contact details for IOSH Isle of Man Branch? The IOSH members there should be able to help informally.

Correct, but although they are not a member of the EU they do use our regulations as best practice (well some of them).
They do have a slightly different approach to safety compared to us & you will have to work closely with the locals to gain their respect as they very much do their own thing in Isle of Man.
I used to love working there, enjoy

I worked there some time ago. Spoke with the IoM Safety Inspector who told me that most industry is of the cottage type and that the principles of the HASAWA are used along with the current crop of regulations if they apply. You will not go far with applying reasonableness to the work...

I worked there a dozen years or so ago as part of a role covering Northern England and the IOM. They aren't in the EU (or the UK for that matter) but they are an associate member, which means that they tend to adopt similar principles to those in the directives but take more time about it; for instance I think they drew up some RA regs in about 2002. UK law is regarded as "persuasive evidence" by Manx courts, so things actually tend to work in a fairly similar way to the UK. Also bear in mind that the total population is somewhat less than that of Reading, Doncaster or Stirling; it's not a big place and when I was working there the H&S department had two people; they were friendly and keen to talk,
John
