Hi,

As I understand it, from a lecture at a recent IOSH branch event, the Scottish courts don't have a similar document in place. However, the Scottish Courts have normally reflected the sentencing guidelines for the rest of the UK. It is therefore expected that they will do again with this

Hi,

Douglas is correct. Scottish courts do not follow sentencing guidelines in the same way as English and Welsh courts, but they will no doubt eye events south of the border with interest,

The background to the existing Sentencing Council for England & WAles is covered at :-

https://www.sentencingco...org.uk/about-us/history/

The Scottish Sentencing Council was officially established on 19 October 2015!

The Council is an independent body with administrative support from a secretariat team based within the Judicial Office and is responsible for preparing guidelines to help ensure a consistent approach to sentencing throughout Scotland. It is also tasked with raising public awareness and understanding of sentencing practice.

Thanks Jay! That had completely slipped in under my radar! Which, thinking about it, is actually quite alarming! Thanks indeed. Another site to put on my personal watch list.

Oh, and by the way, does anybody have an answer for the second half of Douglas's query; does anybody know what, if anything, is happening in Northern Ireland?
