mikeeeeeboy - what type of paint? Solvent borne or water borne
What container is it in? Usually if it is solvent borne then it will be in a metal can.
Also, what quantity of paint are we talking?
Any other chemicals with it e,g paint stripper, white spirit, etc?

We stored anything flammable in a metal store cupboard.
The rules are different for retail display areas.

This depends largely on your storage area then. How big, what else is in there, is there any fire protection i.e sprinklers, extinguishers, in place. The product would be flammable and segregation is the key here, i.e not stored near anything combustible. Is is a locked storage area, etc, etc... Based on you storage area, frequency of use, what else is stored, accessibility, etc. If paints are opened and part used then returned there is a potential issue with lids not being replaced properly. As Martin says one method of segregation is a metal storage cupboard. But you need to assess the risks. Use the Safety Data Sheets and assess the risks this should also help: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pUbns/priced/hsg51.pdf

Cheers Mike I think it is something to do with container size and the fact that storage in the retail area is seen as temporary whilst awaiting despatch (via a customer). From memory I think there is something in HSG51. Also containers in retail are never opened unless via a spill.

As well as DSEAR and CoSHH don't forget your Fire Risk Assessment to reflect the acknowledged significant risk.
