There has been a couple of media reports potentially linking cases of cancer among users to exposure to rubber granules used as shock absorption in 3G sports pitches. Is anyone aware of any decent studies specifically on this, either from a scientific study or advice from the manufacturers or trade bodies? I've seen the media reports and some related (but not specific) scientific studies mainly from the USA, but these often relate to other types of playing surface such as rubber playground surfaces. Firesafety101 started a recent post on this subject. Quite a bit of debate but very few articles beyond the emotional blame apportioning. The discussion of cancer is fraught with problems of proven association to a single cause given the broad range of triggers the general population are exposed to during their life time. Was it the 3G pitch or the 40 minutes in traffic getting to/from the pitch?
