Hi
What is the risk of having mostly PVC cable on the fire alarm? This is frequently making an appearance on our Fire Alarm Service Notes and consequently the contractors (electrical contractors rather than fire alarm engineer) result is an 'unsatisfactory' system and they simply recommend a full system upgrade. Surely incorrectly rated cabling is a 'not to current standards' type issue rather than a 'fail' if the system is working correctly and should be factored into the fire risk assessment?
Thanks
H

I don’t have much info to hand at the moment, so it’s more a question & answer session, well questions anyway, you’ll need to give the answers HC! ;)
What are the cables actually “doing”?
If you cut through the cables would it affect the fire alarm system?
In the event of a fire if the cables burnt through, would this affect the alarm?
Are they pvc/pvc, or are they FP200 type? (FP200 is a trade name, other cables of this type are available).
When do these systems originate from?
What did the standards for the fire alarm say were the requirements when the alarm system was desgined.
What does BS5839 say now about what the requirements are?
IF the cable integrity can compromise the alarm, what does your FRA say about it?
What has changed?
Are the contractors you use competent to assess the system?
Not the “company” but the actual people “doing” the work, there is a difference.
What are the reasons given for the “fail” surely they must justify their decision with quotes from standards or guidance or the like?
What does accepted industry guidance say about the situation you describe?
I stay as far away from Fire Alarms as I can TBH, one has to draw limits somewhere, however, I do have some knowledge & experience.

Thanks Paul. Plenty of questions there that I can't answer so guess I need to go back to the electricians.....
There is no doubt that the system needs upgrading, which would have been compliant at the time of installation, but at present it's still working and being a small public premises will give plenty of warning to get people out prior to the cable failing. They don't currently give a commentary with the 'fail', (working on this and they are getting better) which is probably where I need to start.... Would be interested in the content of others' reports, I think I would ideally want something similar to a 'gas safe' cert which outlines where the system isn't up to standard, but also states when there is a major safety issue (i.e. parts not working!).
