Hi, I need a bit of help here. I work for a company that wants to manufacture game larders for the storage of deer carcasses. The issue is, any electric hoist that we install will come certified with a relevant SWL. My question, does the mounting point need to be tested and certified or is it just the bolts. The hoist will be on a been that protrudes approx 1m out from the unit. Also do any of the gambrels (deer hanging equipment) need to be tested and certified? I've checked through LOLER and PUWER but found nothing definitive. Has anyone got any advice? Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Brian, I currently work in an abattoir, and our casualty/emergency slaughter area has a similar setup to the one you have described. Firstly, your gambrel (I call it a beef tree in our application) is a lifting accessory and falls under PUWER so needs to comply. anything the hoist is attached to should be load rated, IE, use rated eye bolts and shackles, as opposed to fabricating something in house to mate the hoist to the structural steelwork. the steelwork you described should also be marked with a unique ID and SWL after load testing. Load test and certification should be relatively straight forward. You may want to consult your lifting equipment engineer/insurance inspector for more advice on this.

Hi, I'm still looking at the legalities of this. We have 'manufactured' lifting equipment that consists of a welded stainless steel ring. Should this be NDT tested to determine weld integrity and then tested to destruction to determine the SWL. I would realy like some help from all of you LOLER/PUWER experts out there.

Thanks in anticipation.
