I am looking for guidance on the working hours for UK employees working outside the EU. Technical Service staff working for several weeks at a time often where they are the sole technically capable person so may work many consecutive days, often for more than 8 hours per day. How does the Working Time Directive apply? What would be considered an excessive consecutive working period without a rest day? Can anyone provide any clarification based on experience or technical knowledge please?

Local rules, cultures & laws apply not the WTD We worked a basic 7 day x 10 hour shift minimum & as much paid over-time as possible on top noting that U are overseas for money & nothing else - our biggest risk was divorce [not joking!] Get a feel for the culture, laws & what hours in what conditions are required & importantly evaluate the staff involved as many staff are not suited for working away, also note the inherent stability of the country being worked in & what people could be doing in any down-time, thereafter all U can do is advise & pass across as much as possible to HR and managers involved & note also that people can work safely etc. for far more hours in harsh conditions than is the norm in the UK nowerdays best of luck

NB: Rest periods between shifts / weeks were unheard of [and many jobs went on for months at a time without formal leave] & not seen as a need because of any H&S issue - people occasionally did take unpaid time off to see the sights and that was it In my personal view H&S is used as an excuse to stop in many cases as against being used properly by many in the UK when it comes to working hard but safely in harsh conditions
