Hi all, I am trying to get my head around Australian H&S law and am hoping that someone on here has either lived there or currently works there that can help.
So far all I can find is the Occupational S&H Act 1984 and the Oc S&H regulations 1996 which is about 400 pages long and seems to cover everything under the sun. Question is, do they not have risk specific regulations like in the UK?
Looking for any help anyone can offer.
Thanks
Laura

Hi Laura,
I'm not sure what you mean by risk specific regulations. Many of the Acts and Regulations will reference Australian Standards. The Standards will provide additional requirements for the management of different hazards e.g. AS 2865 deals with confined spaces, AS3666 with legionella etc.
There are also references to other regulations, such as dangerous goods storage and handling, and various codes of practice.
I hope that this helps.
Andrew

WHS and OH&S—what’s the difference?
Before 2012, health and safety laws were known as OH&S laws. Differences in the OH&S laws across the states and territories were confusing for business owners and employers.
To make the laws more consistent across Australia, in 2012 the state and territory governments agreed to develop model laws (WHS Act and Regulations), on which they could base their health and safety laws.
All states and territories have made new WHS laws based on the model laws, except for Victoria and Western Australia. This is why the Victorian and Western Australian acts and regulations still refer to OH&S (or OSH) instead of WHS.
In essence, Australia has a federal System and it is the the Individual States that have their own WHS Laws based on the Federal Model laws
