Has anybody undertaken this card. I did yesterday. What about this question! What should you do before alighting a vehicle?
A) Look before getting out.
B) Jump to the ground.
C) Maintain 3 points of contact.
D) Face the vehicle when alighting.

Which do you think the answer was as correct?

E) None of the above, wait until the vehicle has stopped in a safe place.

I would go with "A" as the question specifies "before" where the others you may do "as" you are getting out.

Not sure what vehicle they are talking about, but if it is one you have to climb down from, then you would do A then C & D.

Obviously E would come first if on the list.

Well, lets's not split hairs please. The question is obviously stopped. (I hope). The answer they wanted was C). I put A)

A better question would have been which one should you NOT do ? and that is B.

Easier to maintain three points of contact if you are facing the vehicle, though not impossible to face away (all be it stupid). I tend to look where I'm going before getting out of any vehicle, I'm funny like that.

What has this to do with gas? Hope they have questions on shoring up excavations.

If the vehicle has made contact with an overhead power, line then maintaining contact could be fatal! Jumping would be the correct strategy... All depends on context.

Steve,

Can you back up that with sound science & engineering?

Think birds on a wire.

If the machine is @ 132kV, wrt to true earth then the ground around it will be @ 0V wrt true earth.

That is one heck of a step potential, you would need to jump a heck of a way from the machine to ensure that the 132kV could not jump the gap.

Paul, as with so many things, "it depends"... If the tyres are still providing resistance, and haven't blown or burnt away, then it may depend on the ground resistivity, and what footwear you have on... If the tyres have gone, then the step or touch potential will depend on the charge dissipation... Jump, but keep your feet together when you land may be the best option?

Naah,

IF, you are alive after the strike, then you are a bird on a wire.

DO NOT JUMP!

Keep people AWAY, get someone who is a distance away to dial 999, & report the incident, they can arrange a grid shutdown, with the DNO, or NG, which is what could be necessary.

You have no idea when or if the tyres will pop, what if they go when you are mid jump?

Then you have perhaps 400kV down to ground, depending on the line.

A line strike is serious, and MUST IMHO be reported to the line operator, and their advice sought, immediately before ANYTHING else including, leaving the "striking" equipment is considered, until the line is proven dead.

The question does not relate to power lines. One problem is seeing something that isn't there. Or assuming the but if scenario. This is a problem when doing CSCS cards. Just focus on the question. Don't add things to it. Anyway, my point being what a stupid question

Back to power lines as they are more interesting if hit

Look out for the Western power DVD and training document " look out - look up" used in training all of our drivers that use tippers and lifting gear.

Well worth a peek
