Back in the day before blanket LEP on site you used to see people wearing safety goggles when using jackhammers. These days I see LEP being worn. I've no idea what speed a jackhammer will eject a stone or similar when breaking out but was wondering which is the correct item of PPE to be worn.

I have always taken the view the correct PPE should go with the correct activity. Hence when working with equipment which could give projectiles at a considerable force you need impact resistant goggles. Light eye protection (LEP) is for general work. Never liked blanket rules partly because of this issue.

EN 166 covers the general specifications for protective spectacles, goggles and visors. It incorporates the mechanical strength, field of use and optical performance of all these products. You can look at at it and build up an eye protection policy that identifies task/activity then minimum protection and EN specification. PM me and i will send you an example.
