I am looking to carry out noise risk assessments and monitoring at work (construction sites).

Has anyone done this course? Would they recommend it?

My main concern is that I am generally fine with exams but I must admit, I'm not great with numbers/maths. Is this a problem with regards to the end exam as it is not cheap and I'd be devastated if I failed and the company paid for me?

SSm,

There's been a couple of threads recently on the subject.

One thread, here, a few guys say they have done IOA or similar, you could PM them, or wait for more postings here,

Simply follow the guidance in the Control of Noise at Work Regs 2005. No need to understand all the maths in a noise course to carry out monitoring.

I have done the IOA course. I found it a very good course and it gives you the tools to undertake noise risk assessments. Like you, maths isn't a strong point but you use a scientific calculator to do the workings and this is tested in the exam. In the real world, I use the ready reckoner in the ACOP rather than a calculator. One thing I will say is that there seems to be some confusion over monitoring and assessing. These are completely different and not much thought is required to just monitor noise levels and determine whether it exceeds the action levels.

Also, a lot has been said about competence. The reason why I did this course was that a colleague of mine undertaking noise assessments who had H & S quals and lots of years of experience was not deemed to be competent by the HSE.
