Just in case the post by SocketMan in my thread it missed. "13A" socket covers have been banned, and are required to be removed and disposed of across the whole of the NHS estate in the UK. About time, and a small victory for common sense H&S. So, those of you in the NHS, check the alert system, those of you not in the NHS, please review any policies that you have in place, and get this dangerous rubbish disposed of. Those of you in retail, make sure that your employer no longer sells these dangerous devices. Please, make a difference, and start getting sensible H&S a good name. Thank you SocketMan. A good subject to post - I will admit to being very sceptical when first reading it as I was one of those mis-informed who bought some when my kids were young. Luckily we never had any issues that we're aware of.
Is this now an issue for Trading Standards or equivalent to investigate too and not just us to spread the word?
Well done

If hospitals and other NHS premises could be persuaded to collect electrical socket inserts for bonfires in their regions and arrange for well-known individuals to set fire to them with plenty of media coverage, such events would help to publicise how totally useless and potentially unsafe these devices are and thereby influence parents and others to i) stop buying them and ii) effectively dispose of existing ones. It might even persuade some retailers, especially the well-known ones, to stop selling the (pre-deleted expletive) things!!!

p.s. Another thought: if IOSH could arrange for someone really well known to set light to a big bonfire of the things with ample publicity, it might also help publicise IOSH and its members in a bid to counter some widespread misperceptions about "elf n safety"!!!! However, best to have the bonfire in a suitable location and keep the bonfire from being too big so as to avoid massive plumes of dark smoke from the burning plastic!

Or how about recycle them?

As a development of my suggestion at #4 about bonfires of socket inserts, just have a few small token ones ignited by well known people and arrange, as far as feasible, for the bulk of the devices to be collected and sent for re-cycling.
If possible, try to ensure that the media coverage includes the fact that most of the devices are sent for recycling, preferably by actually showing consignments of devices bound for recycling somewhere. If viewers see such images, they will remember this aspect far more readily than simply hearing someone say what will happen to the devices!

Good thought about recycling the devices - far more economic and environmentally friendly than disposing of them by burning or landfill. Also, believe it or not, I didn't see your posting at 5# until I hit the post button to submit my second posting.
Another general thought about socket inserts. Perhaps they shouldn't be referred to as 'devices' i.e. a general expression for things which actually have some purpose. Therefore, a far better term for them is pseudo-devices. The only benefit they have is that of generating money for those who make and sell them!
