Sorry Keija, I don't understand your query. Laboratory furnaces are frequently programmable so, in principle, I don't see why they should not be programmable using a mobile phone. The dangerous aspects of a furnace come from a variety of sources - what you put in it, how you put it in, how you take it out, etc., but these are totally independent from the controls on the equipment.

Keigia - the answer as Jane says is yes...however the most important part would be to ensure the security of the control system and access to it via a wireless network which could be accessed by others maliciously. yes but you would need to conduct a Control system HAZOP or similar to find out what the risks are..

If you're trying to control the oven remotely, how would you ensure that no-one is exposed to risk when turning the oven on?

I don't think that would give rise to a significant risk. The control panel would show what the furnace was doing. These things are often set to run a programme, and left to get on with it. I am not aware that this gives rise to any problems.

However Jane, stillp has a point, PUWER Reg 14 has a lot to say about this. Regardless of the control panel, the OP seems to be asking about overriding the local controls?

Or are we aiding and abetting the planning of a criminal / terrorist event? Remote overheat of furnace and/or content resulting in a time shifted fire. Laboratory staff are normally involved in the specification of equipment and the manner in which it is used.
