Humour on the part of H&S professional: coping mechanism or failure to understand the gravity of the situation! Or are we really the boring stereotypical people we are made out to be? Discuss :o) Chris

There is certainly a place for humour within our industry - as long as it does not become a joke.

My team were presenting to the business yesterday, explaining how we provide support in the design, development and construction of new HV infrastructure. I included the following video, went down a treat....

I use the 'fire' from Faulty Towers, it gets everyone laughing and talking about it.

Invictus, yes, I also used to use that clip in my training courses as well - I believe it's from the "Germans" episode. Whoever wrote the script knew something about fire safety (or lack of it!), but I still like the best comment made by Basil regarding the safe alarm bell being at least an octave higher than the fire alarm! I believe Manuel actually got hurt in the episode & if you watch it, you can see how! I was showing it one day at a local Town Hall just before lunch & during the break I was approached by a senior official who took me to one side & told me that there had been a complaint made from other building users that there was laughter coming from the room!!

Don't we have to have this surgically removed? I knew I shouldn't have ticked that box.

I've also used a Fawlty Towers episode in quality assurance training, the one about the builders. Considering that what we have to deal with in our profession ranges from the tragic to the downright hilarious, and all points in between, we need a sense of humour to stay sane.

An alternative to Basil Fawlty's fire drill is this one from the US version of the office. I would love to do this - just once ☺

I spotted the following recently on a demolition company website in relation to lifting operations which made me chuckle. "Our experienced team of site management know have vast experience in lifting operations so we know exactly where the carnage should take place"

Its just plain cringe worthy watching a trainer trying to be funny when they are the only one who finds it funny. Videos showing people having accidents a'la You've been framed get the best reactions.

Humour has its place and indeed many of the funniest people I know are funeral directors and nurses, so maybe it is a coping mechanism. On here, I love a bit of humour, with special mention to Invictus who never fails to make me laugh. I think some of it goes over the heads of some people, but I bet he/she would be good company down the pub.
