Dear All,

Can someone describe the difference between design philosophy and safety philosophy in the context of process safety management.

Regards

Much is common. A design philosophy gives expectations of an intended engineering design.
e.g. spacing distances between equipment, ATEX ratings for equipment, fire safety approach for pool fires/jet fires, size of work platforms/human factors clearances

The expected types of safety studies that will be undertaken - HAZOPs/HAZIDs/Constructabilityreviews. The risk tolerance for LOPA/SIL assessments for C&I systems. The general risk criteria for the project - usually a matrix.

The design/technical standards that a design will comply with.
The project organisation e.g. what each design engineer is responsible for, how technical queries will be resolved.

A design philosophy will contain little or no information about accident reporting etc or the 'softer' sides of h&s.
