Has a career as a health and safety proffesional got a lot more competitive?
I am relatively new to the industry... With 3-4ish years as a first time H&S Advisor within a large manufacturing/process/gas industry.
I am early 30's and hold the NEBOSH General certificate and Construction certificate, along with the NVQ5 with GradIOSH status.
Is it much harder to get a job these days in safety? I have applied for numerous H&S manager roles with little success. I know if I recieved an interview I could really sell myself... I'm just curious to know if the market is swimming with many h&s pro's.

In a word - 'yes'.
Especially if you are working in anything to do with the process safety sector / oil / gas.
Until the oil price goes back up, there are lots of qualified guys chasing few jobs or just about holding on to existing jobs

Hi Cornwall74, I don't know about the industry as a whole, but having spent a few years around recruitment I was always led to believe that if you are applying for jobs where you (feel you) meet the criteria without getting to the interview stage then the problem is likely to be with your CV. It may be worth getting some advise with this. the National Careers Service is a good start. They are free and can advise in person or over the phone. They have a good website too: https://nationalcareerss...t.gov.uk/Pages/Home.aspxAlso, I guess if its an employers market then they may be looking at the CMIOSH applicants - I know this doesn't necessarily make someone a better candidate - but generally the status will impress employers, who may feel they are getting more bang for their buck

Judging from the amount of h&s jobs being advertised there are plenty of vacancies. I think the most notable difference is the criteria which has become much more demanding. When you look at the role you think it fits but when you drill down to the specifics the role often requires a lot of specialist skills. Sometimes when reading the JD I wonder if there is anyone out there with all those skills and qualifications!
