Hi,

Our site teams transport kit to and from our fit out sites at the beginning and end of each project.  This includes taking the site fire extinguishers. Recently some have commented that they can’t transport them in their vehicles without appropriate signage displayed on the vehicles. I can’t find any definitive information that suggests specific signage is required for vehicle transporting or carrying fire extinguishers. Does this fall under some other requirement, such as compressed gas cylinders?

 Any guidance would be welcomed.

Hi Andy.

There is no requirement for signs to be on vehicles carrying fire extinguishers. Carriage comes under ADR.

1.1.3.6 gives guidance on the amount you can have on a vehicle before you need to have signs on. As UN1044 (fire extinguishers) are Transport Cat 3 you can have up to 1000 litres before part 5.3 of ADR is applicable (This is the section that details the requirement to put things on vehicles)

Hope this helps

Andy

As you are transporting fire extinguishers as opposed to them being a vehicle fitment you really need input from a DGSA.

It is likley you are not complying with ADR (from recollection must be fitted with devices to prevent accidental discharge in robust packaging) in which case a pretty label on the back of the van is the least of your issues

ADR can be downladed from the UN website search UNECE ADR
