What are your views on online/blended training?

Hi everyone, Could I ask for your views on online/blended training, especially basic mandatory training , introductory training etc.
Have you examples of where it is a sucess, and examples of where it just did not work? I have heard that some large firms provide online training to subcontractors, does anyone have examples of this? Regards Seamus

Hi Seamus
I presume you are talking about e-learning courses which are available via online providers. Some topics might be suitable or more practicable via e-learning - for example, DSE. However I personally don't like e-learning because it is a cheap and often not a suitable method of providing proper training.
Never experienced e-learning for sub-contractors, again I presume you mean an induction. Depends on the risks really, but as a general comment I would not endorse this method of training. In many instances like Asbestos Awareness Training the presenter needs to know his subject and be prepared to answer questions.

Blended Learning is one of those buzzwords that have become
fashionable in certain circles (like mindfulness). It can mean variety of
things, but it usually refers to training models where the learners are presented
with both face to face traditional type training and some form of e-learning
with both systems complementing each other. Within blended learning there are
whole variety of approaches from ones where the trainer takes the lead and just
drops the bit of e-learning in when they want to, to the very student oriented approaches
where the e-learning is used and controlled by the student and the trainer acts
more like mentor helping the student through the bits they don’t understand and
where they need more support. I haven’t checked the literature about which approach
is best and I would suspect that it depends on what you are trying to teach to
whom over what time period.
