Hi all,

I am after some advice re PEEPS.

We have a blind student and the obvious provision would be to "buddy" some up with them who will assist during an evacuation.

However I have been informed that there isnt anyone that is likely to be in attendance each and every time this student attends.

I'd be interested in how you would look to put something sufficient in place for this person. Regards

Russ

Apologies if you have already done this, but have you asked your student what they need in the event of an evacuation? I believe the first thing to determine is does he/she need a buddy?

In my experience, throwing a buddy ar a disabled person can be the default setting following a PEEP assessment. In practice, there is often an easier way as ensuring a buddy is on tap can indeed be problematic

Blind people come in all shapes and sizes when it comes to independance. We have a blind member of staff who is a lawyer and travels 20 miles each way to work (with her dog). This involves complicated London Underground interchanges in the crush hour. She has a PEEP, but there's very little provision as she has few needs.

So ask them what they need first and if they do need a buddy and you can't identify a person or cadre of persons, why not brief his/her fellow students. I cannot imagine s/he will be in a class alone on many ocassions
