A Delta Airlines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to Manchester on 25 September after fire resulted in smoke entering cabin. Investigation identified that the fire had involved a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone ("phablet").
US Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency order banning all such devices from 15 October. Other air agencies, e.g. in Singapore have followed suit.
Advice from the UK Civil Aviation Authority and other European authorities at present is that any such device should be carried in hand luggage, be switched off and not charged in flight.
However, many airlines (including Virgin) have banned these devices from being carried on their flights.
If you have one of these devices, there's a product recall on the Samsung website. Don't ignore this!!
